Description :
Item/Title: Bible, Latin: Biblia Latina, The Holy Bible, (Genesis to Revelation) with the Prologues and Interpretation of Hebrew Names. With Concordance. Medieval Illuminated Manuscript. Year: 1250 (Circa) Inscriptions/Signatures: Signed prize binding (inside upper cover) by Francis Bedford, world-famous 19th century bookbinder. Also includes bookplates of John William Pease and Lucy Ann Pease. John William Pease was an English baronet. No information on final bookplate except that it also contains the "Pax et Spes" (Peace and Hope) motto and the initials H.B. - another similar or same bookplate has been located in another medieval volume formerly owned by Pease, but this information was merely catalogued and the significance of the bookplate is unclear. Lucy Ann Pease appears to have been this John William Pease's granddaughter. Biography: John Pease, 1st Baron Wardington - John William Beaumont Pease, 1st Baron Wardington (4 July 1869 - 7 August 1950), was a British banker. Pease was the son of Helen Maria and John William Pease of Pendower, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and of Nether Grange, Northumberland. He served as Chairman of Lloyds Bank from 1922 to 1945 and of the Bank of London and South Africa from 1922 to 1947. In 1936 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Wardington, of Alnmouth in the County of Northumberland. Lord Wardington married the Hon. Dorothy Charlotte Forster, daughter of Henry Forster, 1st Baron Forster, and Rachel Cecily Douglas-Scott-Montagu and widow of the Hon. Harold Lubbock, on 4 April 1923. They had two sons, Christopher and William. Lord Wardington died in August 1950, aged 81, and was succeeded in the barony by his eldest son Christopher. Biographical information derived from Wikipedia. Binding: Dark 19th century blindstamped brown morocco, with raised bands and gilt lettering on spine. Gilt page edges. Spine reads, "BIBLIA LATINA / MS. SAEC. XIV." Front cover a little scuffed on surface, but still an excellent volume. Size: 24mo (5-5 ¾") Collation: i-xiii24, xiv23 [of 24], xv-xxi24, xxii22, xxiii-xxvii24 + 7 leaves at end. Few traces of alphabetical leaf signatures. Each leaf numbered in pencil in inner lower margins but missed after leaves 340 & 367, thus ends at 650 not 652. 2-col., 48-49 lines, ruled plummet. Description: Handwritten in Northern France, possibly Paris. Handwritten on vellum; miniature paintings and illuminations. Dark brown ink, tiny gothic hand, some headings in red, capitals touched in red, versal initials in Psalms and Interpretations written in red and blue, chapter numbers and running-titles in alternate red and blue; some flourishing, 2-line chapter initials in red and blue; contrasting penwork far into margins. About 142 full-color large painted decorated initials - leaves, plant-stems, animals, etc. - grotesques. Marginal corrections in decorative cartouches. Includes Concordance and a few other medieval notes, including Psalm numbers. Oval red stamps at ends and on fols. 88m, 125r, 247r, 263r, etc. Condition: Excellent overall condition. Complete minus 1 leaf after fol. 321 (so 652 of 653 leaves). Some decoration extremities & marginal notes slightly cropped. Some thumbing/ marginal defects (moreso at ends), few tears/ stains, generally sound. Nearly all pages have some measure of wrinkling at margins; due to age of vellum. Opening pages browned or with some soiling but most pages clear and white. Reference: N/A Special Note: Due to the smaller size of this Manuscript Bible, it is much more rare and scarce than the larger versions. N° de réf. du libraire
