First Edition. Two volumes bound as one in (publisher's?) boards with leather spine labels; minor staining and wear; a little foxing; bookplate; old dealer's catalogue description pasted inside the back cover; in a custom quarter-morocco clamshell box. Tipped into the inside front cover is a lengthy one page holograph letter from Charles Nodier to the publisher, denying authorship and threatening him with legal action if he continues to attribute the work to him. Ruthven first appeared as a character in Polidori's The Vampyre. Nodier adapted it into a play in 1820, Le Vampire, which, translated into English, made it onto the London stage. It seems likely that this novel, and its misattribution to the successful playwright, was meant to capitalize on this success. Given the binding and the letter, it appears possible or even likely that this copy was the publisher's own. N° de réf. du libraire 23249
