Collection de physique mathématique, fascicule 1. Contents : La dynamique des quanta. - L’optique des quanta. - Statistique des quanta. // The de Broglie story is myth and history in one. Younger son of an old aristocratic family, with years of productivity lost to the first World War, then the almost sudden discovery of wave mechanics which he himself dated to his three notes of 1923, of which his 1924 thesis was an exanded version (Abragam, p.29). The great jury confronted with the thesis (Cartan, Langevin, Perrin, Mauguin) could not fully appreciate the discovery and it was sent to Einstein for evaluation. Schroedinger added the decisive steps in 1926. Or as Steven Weinberg re-tells it: "De Broglie guessed that the electron can be regarded as some sort of wave" and "he did not invent any sort of dynamical wave equation." And, despite the high expectations, "he did virtually nothing else of scientific importance"; it was "Schrödinger in Vienna who in 1925-26 transformed de Broglie's rather vague ideas about electron waves into a precise and coherent mathematical formalism" (Dreams of a Final Theory, pp. 69-70). The book is, in any case, a monument. . N° de réf. du libraire 70938
