Description :

FIRST PRINTING, (1943), without notice of any printings on the copyright page (publisher's policy was to add a notice of printings starting with the second printing), binding is tight & secure, text in the French language, the pages of the text are clean and unmarked with other markings in the book noted, pages are very lightly browned, the only part of the dj with the book is the front inside flap (3" X 9") which has $2.00 printed at the top and on the bottom the following is written: " Reynal & Hitchcock, Inc. 386 Fourth Avenue, New York," of course the text between the top & the bottom is written in French, illustrated by the author and mostly in color, covers are a salmon (or apricot) color, the lettering on the spine and the front cover and the design on the front cover are a dark brown, first six pages are not numbered, the first page with a number is "7," after page 91 there are two more pages that are not numbered, previous owners' names and a gift inscription on front paste-down, the crow/bird is present on page 63 and there is no line (sunbeam) in the 8 o'clock position on page 33, thirty or forty years ago (my estimate) another book dealer had written in pencil near the top of the fore edge of the first blank page the following: "1st edition 1st state $25.00," inside the front cover in black ink (or very dark blue) the following is hand written: "Jerry Jervis 5/7/43" then in red ink someone else hand wrote: "(Stadthagen)"? and " To Greg Christmas 1970 from - Mother," inside the back cover someone wrote in pencil "2 --" with an "X" underneath, the top and bottom of the spine and the four tips of the covers are very lightly bumped.
