Stephen Butler Leacock, Original letter dated June 25,43 on his personal creme coloured stationery - OLD BREWERY BAY [7" x 10 1/2"] with 5 folds, scribed with his brown fountain pen addressed to Miss Johnson who had just published a book of poetry entitled: "Sauce for the Goose"in January 1943: " June 25,43 Dear Miss Johnson Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to read your lively Sauce for the Goose.I'm afraid that I can't enjoy it as fully as many other people will as I was born to long ago to get the hang of free verse, But that's on the fault of being 75 not of your verse. Sincerely Stephen Leacock. P.S. this is the second letter as the first went astray." Stephen Leacock passed away the following year. Stephen Leacock's summer retreat was The Old Brewery Bay, in Orillia, Ontario. Stephen Butler Leacock [1869 -1944] was an unlikely combination of humorist and political economist. Throughout his life he was able to successfully combine the roles of satirical and academic writer, university professor and public speaker. A lovely letter with his iconic penmanship.
