[61]pp. Lacks frontispiece leaf. 16mo. Contemporary half calf and modern blue boards. Some damp-staining to boards. Titlepage stained and torn, with some loss to border and text on verso. First leaf lacking (frontispiece); last leaf pasted to rear board, torn with minor loss to text. Some foxing and staining, some tears repaired with Japanese tissue. Overall, a fair copy. A much later edition of the often revised and updated first school book printed in the American colonies, first published circa 1690. A combination speller, reader, and religious catechism. Illustrated with attractive woodcuts. The American Antiquarian Society notes variant issues of this edition, this being the issue with titlepage frame design featuring diamonds and flowers and page [61] featuring a wood engraving of a boy and girl kneeling in prayer before seated parents. Rosenbach notes that the first and last leaf are pasted down, as they are here (though the first leaf is here lacking). Bristol dates this edition incorrectly as 1798. All early editions of this fragile little book are rare. HEARTMAN 343 (2nd ed). ROSENBACH, EARLY AMERICAN CHILDREN'S BOOKS 531. BRISTOL B10406. SHIPTON & MOONEY 48521.
