Vendeur : Blackwell's Rare Books ABA ILAB BA, Oxford, Royaume-Uni
FIRST EDITIONS, monochrome plates to both volumes, pencilled ownership inscription of Hans Berlin to title-page and half-title verso of second volume, pp. [iv], 237, [1]; [iv], 486, [2], 8vo, original green cloth with illustrations to upper boards printed stamped in black and white (the second volume adding red), backstrips lettered in gilt with lettering to upper board of first volume in same, minor rubbing to extremities, patterned endpapers, speckled edges, ownership inscription to flyleaf of second volume, original pictorial dustjackets with some minor chipping to backstrip ends and corners, very good condition. An example of an emergent copy significantly updating what is known about the form in which a major work was issued - here in the presence of the original pictorial dustjackets to both volumes, a feature whose existence has been a point of obscurity for more than eleven decades, with the consensus forming that it had been published without. The dustjackets here present are printed on heavy brown paper with the respective pictorial designs of the cloth reproduced in monochrome to each - that the method of reproduction is photographic is evident in the fact that the grain of the cloth is visible. The lettering also replicates the underlying design, except in the typeface used for the author's name on that to second volume (and other slight variants). The text provided on the other panels provides other useful information regarding its entry onto the market: it gives the price for both the wrapper and the cloth issues, and - on the first volume - announces in the panel to the rear that the second volume is scheduled for the following year (a reliable indicator of the originality of the dustjacket as a feature). The second volume, in the same place, refers back to the first. An attractive, and bibliographically important, set of these charming books, produced to teach school-children their native geography through the fictional adventures of the mischievous hero - who journeys around the provinces with a wild goose as his steed. A best-seller, and part of the national consciousness of Sweden - its author and hero depicted on the country's twenty krona banknote, an example of which is laid in to the first volume for corroboration (a practice we don't intend to introduce as standard with Churchill, Austen, Adam Smith, et al.) Lagerlöf was the first female winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1909 - her nomination resting in large part on this, her best-known work.

8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. To her translator, Marie "Mizi" Franzos (1870-1941), about translating the writer's stories into German: "The thing you ask about on page 199 of En fallen Kung ['A Fallen King'], 'Klippte Klarskinn', you can certainly skip over. I am sure it is not to be found in Germany. But in Sweden they used to, and indeed still do, put dried fish skin in boiling coffee to get it clear and beautifully brown. It was called Klarskinn ['clearskin'] and cut into small pieces. I believe that 'Who has inspired you, woman' is to be found in the Bible, but it is so long since I wrote it that I have forgotten where. Perhaps it is in the Gospels, but I cannot say for certain. Again, krytfjärdingar ['gunpowder firkins'] in 'Uncle Ruben' means 'wooden casks' filled with gunpowder. People here used formerly a little container made like casks, but much much smaller, to keep gunpowder in. You can translate it by whatever is used to keep gunpowder in with you. I am afraid I have nothing to send for Deutsche Rundschau [.]" (transl. from the Swedish original; Swedish text available upon request). - "Mizi" Franzos translated for the famous publisher Albert Langen of Munich. Bard, Marquardt & Co. of Berlin had recently begun a series of illustrated cameos, delightfully produced in an art-nouveau format, and entitled "Die Literatur". No. 7 on Selma Lagerlöf is by Oskar Levertin, and was translated from the Swedish by "Francis Maro", Franzos's alias. Lagerlöf, he says, is "the most astonishing literary anomaly I know", renewing formst hat were long thought buried, "a resurrection that has gripped the hearts of all".

Etat : Very good. First edition, limited. 13pp. Very slim octavo [23 cm] Publisher's printed wrappers. With light foxing to the front wrapper, and 2 shallow tears to the top edge of the front wrapper. Number 10. With 3 woodcut illustrations designed by Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova. Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova's illustrations for Lagerlöf's biblical short story, the last book published in her lifetime, as a donation for Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany. Lagerlöf was the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Literature. Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno, the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bochorakova-Dittrichova's unpublished wordless novel Malirka Na Cestach [The Artist on Her Journey] recounts this period in her life. In Paris, she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Frans Masereel, the originator of the form, and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career, Bochorakova-Dittrichova published several wordless novels, along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator, and was highly regarded in her native land, though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova," and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work, however, is still not widely available.

20x14 cm. [iv], 237, [ii] pp. Publisher"s binding with gilt tools on spine. Illustrated hors-texte . Profusely illustrated hors-texte with photographs by Oscar Rylander, Holger Rosencrantz, Peter P. Lundh, Johan Emanuel Thorin, among many others; drawings by John Bauer and paintings by Bruno Liljefors. Copy with handwritten ownership title on the front flyleaf and occasional underlining and pencil notes throughout. First edition. This is the first volume of Nils Holgersson"s Wonderful Journey Through Sweden, Selma Lagerlöf"s most famous novel, published in two parts between 1906 and 1907. It was written as a Swedish geography textbook on the occasion of a commission by the National Teachers" Association in 1902, and was part of a series of reading books for public schools. However, its scope was much wider and the story proved to be a genuine publishing success, translated and published in several languages. The story comes after some years devoted to the author"s study of nature and familiarization with animal and bird life, distinguished by the integration of folklore and legends from different Swedish provinces, previously unpublished in book form. It tells the story of Nils Holgersson, a boy who is transformed into a tomte (Norse mythical gnome-like creature) because he is lazy and cruel to animals, and who ends up traveling the skies of Sweden riding a goose. This work is so well known in Swedish culture that an image of Nils Holgersson was printed on the back of the SEK 20 note, until new notes came into circulation in 2015. Selma Lagerlöf (Mårbacka, 1858 - 1940) was a Swedish teacher and writer, the first woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1909 and appointed member of the Swedish Academy in 1914. She decided to pursue a writing career after ten years of teaching. Her work focuses on Swedish folk tales and legends of which the present one is the most famous example.
