He was known for many historical writings, but his final major work, History of Scotland was his attempt to skew or change the perceived Scottish national history. Most of the work is based on his own experience in 16th-century Scotland, as well as the history of Hector Boece and his 15th-century Scottish philosophy. Buchanan himself knew that his work would be offensive to many Scots. He said it would, content few and displease many . The famed Lyon publisher Elzevier published a series of travel guides under the title Respublica . This work is a collection of various authors on European countries focusing on geography and historical significance. Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. 1662 Francis Bacon Natural History & Philosophy Scientific Experiments WIND Some books should be tasted, some devoured, but only a few should be chewed and digested thoroughly. Francis Bacon Francis Bacon, one of the most famous English philosophers and scientists of the Renaissance. While most of his work deals with discovery, scientific method, and the scientific revolution, he did lean strongly toward Puritanism in his personal devotion. A rare 1662 Elzevier printing of Bacon s Historia Naturalis, or Natural History. In this work, Francis Bacon sought to show the divisions of natural history, but more importantly to show how natural history overlaps with natural philosophy and they are not two distinct disciplines. This book helped lay the foundation for many philosophical methodologies that would be important through the 18th- and 19th-centuries. Item number: #21348 Price: $750 BACON, Francis Fr. Hardcover. Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Thomas à Kempis s most famous and important work has, for centuries, been The Imitation of Christ. This important 17th-century Elzevier printing contains a life of Thomas a Kempis by Heribert Rosweyde, a Dutch hagiographer. This particular 1658 edition, according to Willems, was published in Amsterdam instead of Lyon, based on the signatures and decorative lettering; however, traditionally, Elzevier devotionals sold better in France than the Netherlands so they put a false publisher on this edition. The correct publishing city was later added to the 1674 edition with no other changes made to the edition. Item number: #23994 Price: $750 KEMPIS, Thomas a Th. a Kempis canonici regularis Ordin. S. He was born at the end of the 15th century in Granada. He studied and traveled throughout the Mediterranean as well as deep into Africa. He was captured by Spanish Corsairs in 1518 near Crete and was taken to Rome and imprisoned. He was presented to the Pope Leo X and for one reason or another was freed and Baptized, given the semi-christian name Leo of Africa or Leo Africanus. This work on Africa was originally published in Italian in 1550. It was reprinted several times and in several languages. This small edition was published in Leyden (Holland) in 1632. Africanus book is considered the first book written by aa person of African descent. It is famously praised by Charles Blockson, for whom the African-American Collection at Tempe University is named, as being the cornerstone of any collection of African history. In this case, it is half of a cornerstone.

Elzevir is the name of a family of Dutch booksellers, publishers, and printers of the 17th and early 18th centuries. The duodecimo series of "Elzevirs" became very famous and very desirable among bibliophiles, who sought to obtain the tallest and freshest copies of these books. Although it appears the family was involved with the book trade as early as the 16th century, it is only known for its work in some detail beginning with Lodewijk Elzevir. The fame of the Elzevir editions rests chiefly on the works issued by the firm of Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir. Their Greek and Hebrew impressions are considered inferior to those of the Aldines and the Estiennes, but their small editions in 12mo, 16mo, and 24mo, for their elegance of design, neatness, clearness, regularity of type, and beauty of paper, cannot be surpassed. Daniel Elzevirium was the son of Bonaventura. This work was printed in Leiden (rather than Antwerp). Johannes Meursius (van Meurs) (1579-1639) was a Dutch classical scholar and antiquary. He was born at Loosduinen, near The Hague. For ten years, he was the tutor to the children of Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, accompanying the family on Oldenbarnevelt's diplomatic missions to many of the courts of Europe. While on such a trip, in 1608, Meursius obtained a doctorate of law in Orléans. In 1610, he was appointed professor of Greek and history and Leiden, and in the following year historiographer to the States-General of the Netherlands. Meursius authored the Glossarium graeco-barbarum, one of the first dictionaries of Modern Greek. In this work, Meursius reviews the expositions of Eusebius of Caesarea, Polychronius, & Pselli and their Canticle of Canticles in Greek. Early House of Elzevir edition.

[ENGLISH DESCRIPTION ON DEMAND].
