Signed by Stephen Chesley on the limitation page; For the first time in its 16 year history, the South Carolina Book Festival has produced a limited-edition chapbook to help raise funds to support festival events. The chapbook features "Ashes", the first story in Julia Peterkin's collection "Green Thursday", her first book. Originally published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1924 and then published by the University of Georgia Press in 1998. Jacket price of $5.00 on front flap and no headbands as called for with the first printing. Limited to 3133 copies (Jaffery 64), stated 3,000 on the volume's limitation page. Pp. xx, 431. Contains reprintings of 16 popular Lovecraft stories and introduced by Derleth's H. P. Lovecraft and His Work. Bound in the press' standard Black Novelex with gilt stamped titles which retains their original luster. Corners of the binding are bumped and there is light shelf wear on edges. Text block edges yellowed with age as typical. Top edge showing early signs of foxing, bottom edge has four small impressions of unknown cause. Interior pages are clean and unmarked. Gray endpapers are clean. Dust jacket has light sunning on spine which has caused the red text to appear orange. Typical bumping and chipping to corners and edges; however, much less than is usual with the early printings. There is a rub adjacent to the "h" in "horror" on the front. This may be the remnant of an early pricing sticker. Jacket edges and the reverse side age toned. A very good collectable copy in a very good jacket.

Also with the small blind stamp of Crendon Hall on the title page and first page. In his book "On Poisons, in Relation to Medical Jurisprudence and Medicine" (Lea & Blanchard, Philadelphia, 1848), Doctor Alfred Swaine Taylor states: "The great value of chemical evidence in otherwise doubtful cases of poisoning, was never more strongly shown than at the trial of Mary Ann Burdock at Bristol, in 1835. The body of the deceased had been buried fourteen months: it was exhumed, and the poison discovered in the stomach and viscera." This advance in forensic science led to a substantial increase in poisoning trials. Chipping to spine, some soiling to boards. Internally clean but for some very mild scattered foxing.
