Description du livre: Paris, Obelisk Press, 1935, 1935. Octavo. Original red wrappers printed in black. Housed in a quarter red morocco drop down box. A superb copy. From the collection of John Martin with his small book label to the inside of the lower wrapper. First Edition, First Impression. One of 150 numbered copies signed by the author. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the first leaf, "To Mr & Mrs Huntington Cairns – first day in Paris. Good Luck! Henry Miller 8/36 Villa Seurat (XIV)". An important association copy marking the start of a great and influential friendship. Cairns was a collector of erotica and a reader and censor for the Customs Bureau, appointed in the early '30s. He helped to quell the fury about Joyce's Ulysses: the book was published in the US shortly after his appointment. Miller recognized Cairns's potential as a formidable foe or invaluable ally, and invited him to Paris in 1936 to show him the town. As a federal censor, it was Cairns who prohibited the importation of Miller's books Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn into the US. N° de réf. du libraire 35970
