Burnett (1847-1906) was a professor of ophthalmology and otology at Georgetown University; he was also a noted collector of art and books. His first wife was the American author Frances Hodgson Burnett, author of "The Secret Garden" and "Little Lord Fauntleroy;" they divorced in 1898, on grounds of "desertion, abandonment, and failure to support."
