The upper cover decorated in all over pictorial designs and lettering gilt, and the rear cover in blind. A very attractive bindings, the book showing some slight cracking to the upper hinge running for approximately 2.5 inches. Internally there is some evidence of water staining to the edges of a some gatherings at the beginning of the volume and there is some intermittent, but not terribly obtrusive foxing to a number of the pages. A RARE AND IMPORTANT BOOK AND ONE OF DOREÕS BEST. THIS IS THE TRUE FIRST EDITION. With his full-page engravings Gustave DorŽ does his best work with great dramatic flare. The countless smaller illustrations round out the book and make it a truly outstanding publishing endeavor. La Fontaine was famously known as one of the important literary group of the Rue du Vieux Colombier which included Racine, Boileau and Moliere. By the 1680s, he was known as one of the first men of letters in France. The FABLES were especially praised by well-known critics and it were well received by the general public. This issuance represents a very lovely printing of La FontaineÕs cherished fables in the original French. Along with the fables are a brief life of Fontaine and a life of Aesop. All edges gilt. Marbled endsheets. Good only. Ex-library. Extremities gently rubbed. The boards are a bit faded and just a little stained. There are library numbers stamped in gilt at the foot of the spine. The cracks along the front joint have been subtly filled in. The endsheets are cracked along the hinges, and the text block is coming away from the spine. The front pastedown has minor library label remains. The pages are tanned, and have sporadic foxing and small light stains. Occasional faint offsetting from the illustrations. There is a 1 inch long closed tear in the bottom margin of p. 20. No internal library stamps. Missing plate Love and Folly at p. 765. Gustave Doré was a world renowned 19th century illustrator. Despite having illustrated over 200 books, some with more than 400 plates, he is primarily known for his illustrations to The Divine Comedy, particularly The Inferno, his illustrations to Don Quixote, and Edgar Allan Poe's The Raven. Featuring a portrait frontispiece and numerous further illustrations by Gustave Dore. Translation by Walter Thornbury. Jean de La Fontaine (IPA: [ tn]; July 8, 1621, Chteau-Thierry April 13, 1695, Paris) was the most famous French fabulist and one of the most widely read French poets of the 17th century. He is known above all for his Fables, which provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe and numerous alternative versions in France, and in French regional languages. La Fontaine had many predecessors in the fable, especially in the beast fable. The poet took inspiration from Aesop, Horace, Boccaccio and Ariosto and Tasso, Machiavelli's comedies, and Eastern stories that in his epoch were transmitted through translations from the Persian. (Louis Auguste) Gustave Dore (18321883). A child prodigy, Dor received little formal artistic training, but his talents as a draughtsman were already apparent during his school years. His first lithographic album was published by Aubert in Paris in 1847. After three years working under contract as a caricaturist for the editor Charles Philipon (18001862), he added book illustration to his repertory. Dore's production as an illustrator remains unmatched for scope or ambition. Among his major works are editions of Rabelais (2nd expanded edn, 1873), Balzac (Contes drolatiques, 1855), Dante (Divine Comedy, 1861, 1868), Charles Perrault (Fables, 1862), Cervantes (Don Quixote, 1863), Milton (Paradise Lost, 1866), La Fontaine (Fables, 1867), Tennyson (Idylls of the King, 1867), Coleridge (The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, 1876), and Ariosto (Orlando Furioso, 1879). Dor also illustrated a host of minor works in a variety of genres. Dore's achievements in the field of illustration earned him polite critical applause, official honours, including the chevalier de la Legion d'honneur (1861) and officier de la Legion d'honneur (1878), and enormous public acclaim. His work was particularly popular with the British public. From 1856 until his death he worked as much for London as for Paris publishers. From 1868 the Dore Gallery in New Bond Street displayed examples of his work in every genre, and he contributed regularly to the Illustrated London News. DNB(George) Walter Thornbury (18281876), author and translator. Thornbury became a regular contributor to many other periodicals, including Bentley's Miscellany, Ainsworth's, Welcome Guest, Once a Week, and Chambers's Journal. He was also a frequent contributor to the later volumes of Dickens's Household Words, and became one of a group of journalistsincluding G. A. Sala, Percy Fitzgerald, and Edmund Yatescommonly referred to at the time as Dickens's young men. Many of Thornbury's articles dealt with geographical and topographical themes. His other writings were varied in style and subject matter, including translations such as Pierre Dupont's Legend of the Wandering Jew (1857) and The Fables of La Fontaine (1867), and historical works such as Shakespeare's England (1856). Rear board is almost completely unattached, hanging on by a thread. Backstrip has come unattached from actual binding, but is attached to front board. 3 small tears at joint between front board and backstrip. Front board is hanging on loosely, with ffep having come unattached, and thus tattered. That said, the boards themselves have little actual wear. There is some minor corner wear, and the top and bottom of backstrip has some minimal wear, and some light foxing, but the boards are generally bright, unfaded, and in very good condition.
