Signed limited edition, number 434 of 600 copies signed by the illustrator. An advertisement issued by the publishers appeared in the Times Literary Supplement on 3 December 1925, which stated "there is only one edition of Hansel and Gretel, which is limited to 500 copies". Evidently demand increased the limitation but, with no trade edition, this is a scarce book. The publishers noted "the art of Kay Nielsen has never been shown to greater advantage than in these truly wonderful illustrations to Grimm's Fairy Stories. The draughtsmanship, the decorative skill, and the fairy imagination are unique, and place Mr Kay Nielsen as one of the greatest of illustrators and decorative artists. This magnificent volume is also a fine example of the engraver's and bookmaker's art". "Nielsen is a brilliant colourist and a highly decorative illustrator, his works formed into frieze-like patterns, are closest to Persian or Middle-Eastern designs and therefore akin to Leon Bakst or Edmund Dulac" (Houfe, p. 401). Times Literary Supplement, 3 December 1925, p. 823; Simon Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914, 1981. Quarto. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in terracotta morocco, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, single rule to boards gilt, pictorial onlay of the gingerbread house to the front board, inner dentelles gilt, dark green endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. With 12 tipped-in colour plates, captioned tissues, and 10 full page monochrome plates. Some minor light damp staining to the fore-edge of 15 pages else an excellent copy in a fine binding.

This copy also with the laid-in announcement from Leicester Galleries regarding the availability for purchase of the original watercolours produced to illustrate this book. With 12 tipped-in color plates, 10 black & white illustrations, decorated title-page, decorated initials, and red decorative endleaves all by Kay Nielsen. 4to, publisher s best original binding of beautiful ivory cloth, the upper cover lettered in gilt and pictorially decorated with Nielsen's all-over designs in gold and turquoise-blue, the spine exquisitly decorated and lettered in gilt and with the artist's name gilt within a field of blue, t.e.g. 276 pp. + plates. A very handsome copy with only very light evidence of age, the text-block, plates and binding all in very pleasing condition. A TRULY HANDSOME COPY OF THE VERY RARE LIMITED FIRST EDITION, IN BEST BINDING, OF THE PREFERRED ENGLISH ISSUE, SIGNED BY NIELSEN. Along with the title story a full twenty-two of Grimm's Tales are beautifully illustrated throughout with Kay Nielsen s wonderfully evocative paintings. Copies this fine and beautiful are very rare. The white cloth, the gilt work and decorative work to the covers, the text-block and plates are in remarkably pristine condition. This is the last book Kay Nielsen would illustrate for Hodder and Stoughton. It was a book begun many years prior and worked on throughout Nielsen's early career. Nielsen had started work on his paintings to illustrate Grimm's stories in 1912, but the work was halted due to the occurance of The Great War. After the 1918 Hodder and Stoughton resumed the publishing work on Nielsen s illustrated books. In 1924 it was finally decided to complete Nielsen's Grimm project. The book was offered only to the luxury market and was not issued in a trade edition in England.

Signed limited edition, number 19 of 600 copies signed by the artist, together with the bookplate of Jan Pie kowski and David Walser. A publisher's advert stated "there is only one edition of Hansel and Gretel, which is limited to 500 copies" (TLS, 3 December 1925). Evidently demand increased the limitation but, with no trade edition, this is a scarce book. "Nielsen is a brilliant colourist and a highly decorative illustrator, his works formed into frieze-like patterns, are closest to Persian or Middle-Eastern designs and therefore akin to Leon Bakst or Edmund Dulac" (Houfe, p. 401). The Polish-born Jan Pie kowski (1936-2022) was an award-winning illustrator and writer of books for children, and a designer of moveable books. He is chiefly remembered for his illustrations to the "Meg and Mog" series. The first book, Meg and Mog, was originally published in 1972. After the death in 2012 of the original author, Helen Nicoll, the series was continued by Pie kowski together with David Walser. Times Literary Supplement, 3 December 1925; Simon Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914, 1981. Quarto. Original parchment-backed orange boards, spine lettered in gilt on morocco lettering piece, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. Original slipcase. Housed in a solander presentation box in full turquoise buckram, blocked in gilt to front and spine and lined with gilt paper including a pocket for the commentary booklet. An exquisitely beautiful edition. Limited and hand-numbered edition of 980 copies (and 20 lettered copies hors de commerce), this copy is no. 128. The text follows the original edition with these illustrations published by Hodder and Stoughton in 1825. As Marina Warner explains in the illuminating essay written for this edition, "the translator and the selection aren't identified, but some of the stories appear to be taken directly from Edgar Taylor's 1823 volumes, and others from an anthology, published in 1853, called 'Household Stories', [.] anonymously translated." Kay Neilsen (1886-1957) came to prominence at the end of a period of great illustrators (including Rackham and Dulac), and though his work shows traces of their influence, there is a sharper, more disturbing edge. He later worked for Walt Disney studios where he contributed to the great 'Fantasia' (1940). "There is no more beautiful book than Kay Neilsen's 'Hansel and Gretel', pale symbols melting into paler backgrounds; planes of action, successive stages of one idea bordering on expressionism." (from a 1926 review in 'The Outlook') Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
