No Binding. Etat : Good. 1st Edition. RAY JOHNSON cover ONLY to the paperback of ILLUMINATIONS, the book of choice & show for impressionable sophomores in the 1960's (see Patti Smith). See drop some acid and watch out & stand back. Sifting thru the SOHO effects of my first wife Arlene Jordan, I found a copy and began to read, I seem to have been too dull or too sans francais to bother then, when I discovered almost hidden behind the cover that it had belonged to her first husband, the poet William Cirocco, whose neat artistic signature was there. They had married in Buffalo, in the golden age, when they were both very young, in the late 1960's, The marriage was annulled two yrs later, but not before they had visited Ezra Pound in Rapallo and lived with Basil Bunting for a time in a small English Village. Time and tide & dust and regrets and effects rush in. The glue had loosened the cover from the binding and I removed it & SIGNED, HARRY NUDEL APRIL/21. Books are our history and our lives. VV6/0. Signed by Author(s).

8vo (183 x 125mm). Vii, 151pp. Original printed wrappers, with glassine jacket, partially unopened (upper wrapper detached, text-block split, spine discoloured, minor browning to leaves). Paris [Evreux, imprimerie de Charles Hérissey]: Léon Vanier, 1892. Uncommon, first collected edition of Symbolist poet Rimbaud's two best-known works, Les Illuminations and Une Saison en Enfer, which were first published in 1886 and 1873 respectively. Some editions have 1892 on the cover and 1891 at the foot of the title page, rather than 1892 as here. The first work here, Les Illuminations is a collection of experimental poems in verse and prose with a preface by Paul Verlaine, taken from the first edition of 1886. Verlaine explains that the poems were written between 1873 and 1875, while travelling around Europe; the title 'Illuminations', used by Rimbaud as the working title, is English and refers to coloured plates. 'A seize ans,' Verlaine writes, 'il avait écrit les plus beaux vers du monde.' The autobiographical Une Saison en Enfer, arguably Rimbaud's most famous collection, was written 'between April and August 1873, the turbulent period which saw his disastrous last stay in London with Verlaine, and their final separation after the incident in Brussels in which Verlaine shot and wounded Rimbaud' (Michaelides, 199). Printed in Brussels by the Alliance Typographique, Une Saison en Enfer was the only one of his works to be published by Rimbaud himself; that is, the nineteen-year-old poet persuaded his mother to pay for it. Leaves browned, good copy. Carteret Romantique II, 272. Vicaire VI, 1135. C. Michaelides, 'Stefan Zweig's copy of Rimbaud, Une Saison en Enfer (1873)', The British Library Journal, 14.2 (1988), 199-203.

Livre Edition originale
Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The prose poems of the great French Symbolist, Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891), have acquired enormous prestige among readers everywhere and have been a revolutionary influence on poetry in the twentieth century. They are offered here both in their original texts and in superb English translations by Louise Var?se. Mrs. Var?se first published her versions of Rimbaud's?Illuminations?in 1946. Since then she has revised her work and has included two poems which in the interim have been reclassified as part of?Illuminations. This edition also contains two other series of prose poems, which include two poems only recently discovered in France, together with an introduction in which Miss Var?se discusses the complicated ins and outs of Rimbaldien scholarship and the special qualities of Rimbaud's writing. Rimbaud was indeed the most astonishing of French geniuses. Fired in childhood with an ambition to write, he gave up poetry before he was twenty-one. Yet he had already produced some of the finest examples of French verse. He is best known for?A Season in Hell, but his other prose poems are no less remarkable. While he was working on them he spoke of his interest in hallucinations--"des vertiges, des silences, des nuits." These perceptions were caught by the poet in a beam of pellucid, and strangely active language which still lights up--now here, now there--unexplored aspects of experience and thought. The definitive translation of the one of the brightest geniuses of French poetry. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.
