SPEECHES AND ADDRESSES. CHIEFLY ON THE SUBJECT OF BRITISH AMERICAN UNION. Presentation Copy.
Description du livre: Chapman And Hall, London, 1865. First Edition. First Edition Inscribed by Thomas D'Arcy McGee. An excellent copy in the original brown embossed cloth covered boards, gilt stamped on the spine. A vital work collecting McGee's major speeches in The Canadian Parliament and in various public forums concerning an evolving new Nationality. McGee's eloquent advocacy did more than anything else to create the psychological basis for union. This rare and early inscription, dated 1866, the year before Confederation and two years before McGee's assassination for his condemnation of the Irish-American Fenians, who invaded Canada, reads: 'To George Murray Esq./B.A. Oxon. / With the good wishes of the present and all other / Seasons, from Thos. D'arcy McGee / New Years Day / 1866'. Murray was a scholar, educator, journalist and litterateur who emigrated to Canada in 1859, a member of the Royal Society Of Canada, author of, Verses And Visions and for a period of ten-years, commencing in 1882, editor of the literary department of the Montreal Star, the country's most important newspaper at the time. The LOC has two copies, one with a poorly reproduced portrait frontis. & one without. As this was the author's copy to present, it may precede the issue with the portrait. A very good example of an important, uncommon book with a rare presentation. Signed by Author. N° de réf. du libraire 32550

A WRITER'S DIARY. Being Extracts From The Diary Of Virginia Woolf. Signed & Dated by Leonard Woolf
Description du livre: The Hogarth Press, London, 1953. Vanessa Bell (illustrateur). First Edition. Woolf, Virginia. A WRITER'S DIARY. Signed & Dated by Leonard Woolf in the month of publication. London: The Hogarth Press, London, 1953. First Edition. 8vo., 312pp. Edited, with a preface by Leonard Woolf. Signed on the ffe.: Leonard Woolf, Nov. 1953. Presumably one of his house copies. A near fine copy in orange cloth, gilt titles to the spine, in an extremely good Vanessa Bell designed dustwrapper with toning to the spine & a small chip to the spine head. Revealing glimpses of Virginia Woolf & essential for an understanding of her writing methods & how her thought process influenced her life & relationships. It was not until Woolf's full Diaries were published that they were recognized, with her letters as companion, as her literary masterpieces. Virginia Woolf kept her diaries from 1915 until her death in 1941. Her husband, Leonard Woolf, notes in his preface that her "diary gives for 27 years a consecutive record of what she did, of the people whom she saw and particularly of what she thought about those people, about herself, about life, and about the books she was writing or hoped to write." Leonard Woolf has here excerpted his wife's diaries from 1918 through 1941, including every reference his wife's diaries made to her own writing. The resulting book "throws light upon Virginia Woolf's intentions, objects, and methods as a writer. It gives an unusual psychological picture of artistic production from within." Most of Keynes's Cambridge colleagues sat on the fence, shaken but sceptical". Skidelsky, Robert. John Maynard Keynes. Fighting For Britain. 1937-1946. STREET HAUNTING. Signed.
Description du livre: The Westgate Press, San Francisco, 1930. First Edition. Woolf, Virginia STREET HAUNTING. Signed. San Francisco, 1930. 8vo., The Westgate Press. First Editon, First Limited Edition. Limited to 500 numbered copies signed by Woolf on the limitation page. Printed at the Gradhorn Press. Patterned paper-covered boards with emerald green leather gilt-stamped spine. Original card slipcase. A fine fresh copy of the most difficult of issues. Kirkpatrick A13 states: "There is at least one variant of the binding in sage-green paper boards patterned in gold and darker green with emerald-green leather spine and a green slip-in case. Mr. David McGee (bibliographer of the Grabhorn Press) states: '". the majority of the edition was bound in blue - ratio of 10 to 1 in favor of blue.". It is reasonable to presume that about 50 copies only appeared in green & that since most of these have faded to brown at the spine, perhaps as few as a half dozen survive in fine unfaded condition. This is one of those elusive fine copies. Signed by Author. N° de réf. du libraire 32520

In a handsome copy of the elusive Vanessa Bell designed dustwrapper that has the distinction of the rarely seen 5/0 yellow price sticker affixed to the front panel. Very minor restoration at the extremites, this dustwrapper looks splendid. In a custom designed TBCL cinnamon cloth slipcase with the Hogarth Press wolf's head logo embossed on the side. Woolf's major polemic against patriarchy, based loosely on two lectures she delivered, one at Newnham and the other at Girton. Kirkpatrick And Clarke A12a. Woolmer 215. Woolf observed in her diary, "I shall be attacked for a feminist". An increasingly uncommon & important Woolf title & 20th century literary highlight. N° de réf. du libraire 32517
