Colophon signed by the artist, the author and the publisher. A mint copy. Cramer, Masson Illustrated Books 47 (erroneously stating that the chemise and slipcase are printed in colour, the present example, clearly original, is hand painted in green and violet). Masson began to work in Paris in the 1920's. His desperate experiences in the trenches of the First War had made him address the question of 'human motivation and man confronting life at its lowest level'. This interest in the subliminal and the spiritual led him into contact with Miró and with the poets of 'proto-surrealism'. When Breton began to organize Surrealist ideas more formally he joined the circle and became one of its most deep-thinking exponents. He soon began to be involved with ideas of 'thought transference', and like Miró began to experiment with forms created under hallucination. After escaping to the USA during the War he returned to Paris in 1945/46 with his interest in printmaking as a medium much stimulated by his contact with Hayter in New York during the War period. This great enthusiasm resulted in some of the most creative post-war 'surrealist' prints by any artist. SAPHIRE, LAWRENCE and PATRICK CRAMER. Cramer 47. André Masson.
