Vice Admiral The Hon. John Byron, (1723 – 1786) was a Royal Navy officer. He was known as Foul-weather Jack because of his frequent encounters with bad weather at sea. Samuel Wallis (1728 – 1795) was an English navigator who circumnavigated the world. Philip Carteret (1733 – 1796) was a British naval officer and explorer who participated in two of the Royal Navy’s circumnavigation expeditions in 1764-66 and 1766-69. Captain James Cook (1728 – 1779) was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. Cook made detailed maps of Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean, during which he achieved the first recorded European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands, and the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. We do not find another example of this same 8 volume set bound in 4 tomes anywhere else worldwide! However, we do find examples that lack the atlas volume for $2,600. This particular set also lacks the atlas volume, but it is still highly desirable. The contents of this work is full of stories and details of various explorations and voyages from Royal Navy navigators. These voyages mainly took these explorers to the Pacific Ocean Islands, often hoping to make circumnavigated voyages. Main author: John Hawkesworth (edit.)
