Revue de presse :
"The twelve stories collected in his book Cathedral are remarkable for the originality of vision which he manages to convey in scrupulously simple prose. Carver's is a considerable and an enterprising talent" (Guardian)

"Cathedral ought to establish his reputation as one of the most original new voices in fiction to appear from the United States for many years" (Bill Buford Times Literary Supplement)

"Carver is a writer of astonishing compassion and honesty, utterly free of pretence and affection, his eye set only on describing and revealing the world as he sees it. His eye is so clear, it almost breaks your heart" (Washington Post)

"An important book in a unique career" (New York Review of Books)
Présentation de l'éditeur :

Raymond Carver’s third collection of stories, a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize, including the canonical titular story about blindness and learning to enter the very different world of another.  These twelve stories mark a turning point in Carver’s work and “overflow with the danger, excitement, mystery and possibility of life. . . . Carver is a writer of astonishing compassion and honesty. . . . his eye set only on describing and revealing the world as he sees it. His eye is so clear, it almost breaks your heart” (Jonathan Yardley, Washington Post Book World).

Description du livre Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition. The book was first published in the US the year before by Alfred A. Knopf, New York. ***Near fine in an American binding - the book was printed and bound in the USA - with cream paper-covered boards over a beige cloth-covered spine. With silver titles to the spine and front board. The silver is still nice and bright. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or creases. Corners sharp with just a light crease to the top corner of the back board. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Edges of text-block clean. Internally fine with no inscriptions, clean with no marks or creases. Spine tight. ***In a near fine monochrome illustrated dustwrapper that has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's price of £8.95 net. The dustwrapper is complete with no tears or chips, but there is a vertical crease to the front flap where it has been folded over. Other than that the dustwrapper is fine, with no chips or tears. No fading to the spine of the dustwrapper. The dustwrapper is clean and fresh. ***228 pages. 220mm x 150mm. ***'"Cathedral" is the third major-press collection of short stories by American writer Raymond Carver, published in 1983. The collection contains the following stories: "Feathers" - A couple visit another couple who have a peacock and a baby; "Chef's House" - Wes rents Chef's house by the ocean and asks wife Edna to come live with him again; "Preservation" - Sandy's husband has taken to the sofa since he lost his job as a roofer three months before; "The Compartment" - Myers, vacationing in Europe, takes a train to meet his son, who he hasn't seen in eight years; "A Small, Good Thing" - An extended version of his earlier short story "The Bath". Scotty, 8, is hit by a car; "Vitamins" - Patti decides to sell vitamins door-to-door; "Careful" - Lloyd and wife Inez are living separately but she helps him with a problem; "Where I'm Calling From" - At Frank Martin's drying out facility with JP, Tiny, and other residents; "The Train" - Miss Dent waits in a train station late at night after she used a gun to force a man to kneel and plead for his life; "Fever" - Carlyle has trouble finding a babysitter after his wife leaves him and the kids for California; "The Bridle" - Marge, a woman who supervises an apartment building in Arizona with her husband Harley, tells the story about a family that moves into an apartment after being displaced from their farm in Minnesota; "Cathedral" - Narrated by a man whose wife is old friends with a blind man, the story shows the husband/narrator's distaste for the blind man who is coming to visit him and his wife for a few days. At times it seems that the man is jealous of the blind man for being so close to his wife; at other times it seems that the husband is disgusted by the man's blindness. In the end they bond in a way through the communication they share about what a cathedral looks like.' [Wiki] ****First impression of the first UK edition, in lovely near fine condition.
