Biographie de l'auteur :
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien est né de parents anglais le 3 janvier 1892 à Bloemfontein (Afrique du Sud) et a vécu toute sa vie en Angleterre. Après avoir servi pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, il s’engage dans une brillante carrière universitaire à Oxford et devient l’un des plus grands philologues de son temps. Mais il doit surtout sa reconnaissance à son extraordinaire oeuvre de fiction : Bilbo Le Hobbit (1937), Le Seigneur des Anneaux (1954-1955) et Le Silmarillion (1977), ainsi qu’à des textes inachevés rassemblés dans l’Histoire de la Terre du Milieu. John Ronald Reuel Tolkien s’est éteint à l’âge de 81 ans, le 2 septembre 1973.

In this book Christopher Tolkien has attempted to extract the story of Beren and Luthien from the comprehensive work in which it was embedded; but that story was itself changing as it developed new associations within the larger history. To show something of the process whereby this legend of Middle-earth evolved over the years, he has told the story in his father's own words by giving, first, its original form, and then passages in prose and verse from later texts that illustrate the narrative as it changed.
