From School Library Journal :

Grade 4-6-- What is it like to be a lowly sixth grader in a sea of upperclassmen? Dinah Seabrooke is about to find out as she enters J. F. K. Middle School. Desperately wanting to make a name for herself, she finds an answer to anonymity by running for class president. In between homework and working on her political strategies, she helps disorganized Mrs. Briscoe; her relationship with the woman becomes a genuine friendship as she stumbles onto an ecology platform for her campaign. This engaging sequel to Dynamite Dinah (Macmillan, 1990) brings new learning experiences for its star and her classmates. The themes, including environmental awareness and compassion for the elderly, are honestly portrayed from Dinah's perspective. She is subtly transformed throughout the book, from a self-absorbed girl to a young woman with a social conscience. Mills brings out the best in her characters, and readers will see themselves positively reflected in this well-written novel. --Jana R. Fine, Clearwater Public Library System, FL

From Publishers Weekly :

In this sequel to Dynamite Dinah , Dinah Seabrooke, now in sixth grade and determined to find her place in the big pond, runs for class president. At the same time, she is enlisted by her mother, an organizational consultant, to help clean out the cluttered home of the elderly Mrs. Briscoe. While delivering that lady's old newspapers to the dump, Dinah stumbles upon the idea for her campaign platform. Though the heroine's comical self-absorption and her grandiose ideas are plausibly depicted, she emerges as the only real character against a backdrop of stereotypes; Dinah's teachers, for example, include an abrasive P.E. instructor who calls everyone "curly top." Her election opponents are a sports captain jock and an earnest opponent of school apathy. While Dinah retains some of the gumption she exhibited in the first book, the issues she grapples with here--sexism, politics and aging--are given a somewhat heavy-handed treatment. A well-intentioned if basically superficial novel. Ages 8-12.
