These and other major questions which have been asked about human facial expression of emotion are examined here in Emotion in the Human Face, the first volume to evaluate and integrate critically all quantitative research conducted since 1914 on this particular psychological phenomenon. Including results from yet unpublished studies, the volume also provides conceptual and methodological guidelines for future research. Among the topics covered are the definition of emotion, sampling emotions, emotion words and categories in judgment studies, methods of recording, and the relative contribution of facial behavior and contextual information to the judgment of emotion. Of special importance are the individual chapters on the question of accuracy in judging emotion from facial behavior and the controversial issue concerning universal expressions of emotion. In many cases, the authors directly contradict, with tables and other full documentation, previous misimpressions by influential reviewers of the literature.
