From the Inside Flap :

PREFACE

It has always struck us as odd that most introductory philosophy texts offer little if anything to acquaint students with pragmatism or to convey the fact that this distinctively American philosophy is a major contribution to world philosophy. Equally troubling is the failure to present the diversity of thinking in America. Our response was the development of New and Old World Philosophy that shows how the divergent voices of American thought have drawn upon, extended, and challenged the Western European philosophical tradition. Selections from American pragmatists C.S. Peirce, William James, John Dewey, and Jane Addams begin each chapter and are followed by writings of both "Old World" philosophers like Plato, Descartes, Kant, and Rousseau and "New World" thinkers like Anzaldua, Du Bois, Santayana, and Warhol.

To enrich and broaden the philosophical discussion, we incorporated selections from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including anthropology, primatology, cultural history, and literature. We made special efforts to include short passages from primary sources and concise commentary to encourage readers to join the dialogue and develop as critical thinkers as they read about the nature of philosophy, reality, knowledge, morality, art, religion, and society. We conclude the chapters, each containing a mix of New and Old World voices, with an essay by one more prominent thinker in America.

We thank Thomas Alexander, Abraham Edel, Peter Hare, Larry Hickman, and Jorge Valadez for support and ideas for developing our project. Patricia Shields deserves special thanks for encouraging us to include selections by Addams alongside those by Peirce, James, and Dewey. We are also grateful to Clinton Hopper for assistance with the biolines for each author and to Beverly Pairett for the preparation of the manuscript. Finally, we would like to thank our students whose responses to a host of philosophical works guided us in selecting the readings for this text.
