Time hardly mattered in the village of Mucker, the birthplace of poet and writer Patrick Kavanagh. Full of wry humour, Kavanagh's unsentimental and evocative account of his Irish rural upbringing describes a patriarchal society surviving on the edge of poverty, sustained by the land and an insatiable love of gossip. There are tales of schoolboy skirmishes, blackberrying and night-time salmon-poaching; of country-weddings and fairs, of political banditry and religious pilgrimages; and of farm-work in the fields and kicking mares.Kavanagh's experiences inspired him to write poetry which immortalized a fast-disappearing way of life and brought him recognition as one of Ireland's great poets.
One of the major figures in the modern Irish poetic canon, Patrick Kavanagh (1904-67) was a post-colonial poet who released Anglo-Irish verse from its prolonged obsession with history, ethnicity and national politics. His poetry, written in an uninhibited vernacular style, focused on the 'common and banal' aspects of contemporary life.

Paperback. Etat : Good. The Green Fool (1977) by Patrick Kavanagh ? Sold by Crappy Old Books Before he was a literary giant, Patrick Kavanagh was The Green Fool ?a wide-eyed young man stumbling through rural Irish life armed with ambition, naivety, and just enough poetic spark to get into trouble. First published in 1938 and reissued here in this gloriously battered 1977 Penguin edition, The Green Fool is a semi-autobiographical gem charting Kavanagh?s early years: mucking about on a Monaghan farm, clashing with small-town convention, and dreaming of something far beyond the hedgerows. Written with earthy humour, lyrical insight, and a healthy dose of self-mockery, this is not your typical tale of literary awakening. It?s muddier, hungrier, more honest?and infinitely more Irish. Condition: Foxed, creased, and unmistakably pungent with the scent of forgotten bookshelves. But hey, the poetry?s still fresh. Crappy Old Books: Proudly flogging the books nobody else has the heart to bin. N° de réf. du vendeur 3524
