This is the original Devdas and although I loved the movie, I thought the book was much better. It is a quick and easy read. Some parts are a little hard to read but I think it has more to do with the difficulty of translating it from Bengali than the actual story. The writing does flow very well and some parts are beautifully written (especially the ending). The look into Bengali culture and social norms were interesting. The characters are interesting and somewhat different from the movie. For example Paro in this seems more stubborn and strong headed, while Devdas is more of an anti-hero who is weak and an emotional wreck. Chandramukhi is sweeter and is more humanized. It is a wonderful book, I think if you liked the movie then you will also like the book --By Meera 1 June 2013

Saratchandra Chattopadhyay tells the tragic story of Devdas and his doomed love in this translation of the original Bengali classic.Devdas is a young man who is in love with Paro. They have been together since childhood, and their love spans their entire life. However, Paro s parents have other plans for her. They want to marry her off to another man, and this marriage will prove destructive to Devdas sanity. His grief, and the story of his drunken stupor as he pines for his beloved Paro, is a classic story that has been told and retold throughout the decades since its first release. This English translation brings out the wonder and tragedy of the original Bengali novel for a new generation of readers.
