Description du livre Paperback. Etat : Very Good. 64 pages. Ronald Hugh Morrieson (1922-1972) lived all his lif e in the same house in the small Taranaki town of Hawera, and yet created a bizarre and brilliantly funny fictional world which co nstitutes one of the most distinctive contributions to New Zealan d fiction. However, his originality and his isolation from a sust aining literary community meant that his work wasvirtually ignore d during his lifetime. His first two novels, though well received in Australia, sank almost without trace in New Zealand, and Morr ieson was unable to find a publisher for his two later noivels, b oth of which were published posthumously. . Simpson provides an illuminating biographical sketch, and discusses each of the nove ls in detail to demonstrate the compelling mixture of comedy, pat hos, suspense and violence of which Morrieson was master.--Back c over. Description du livre Soft cover. Etat : VG+. 1st. As a novelist Ronald Hugh Morrieson (RHM) was a late starter with the first of his four books (two printed posthumerously) not published until he was 41 years old., yet he had completed the four novels when he died in 1972 aged 50. Two were relesed within his life-time: "The Scarecrow" 1963. "Came a Hot Friday " 1964, with the other two "Predicament" and "Pallet on the Floor" 1975 and 1976 published posthumerously. Two short stories were also published after his death. It was on these six examples of his writing that he became recognised as noted NZ novelist, by that was likewise posthumous. This biographical booklet was the 12th puiblished in the OUP's series "New Zealand Writers and Their Work." RHM was more than a writer, his main employment being that of a music teacher (a family following) and played regularly in a number of South Taranaki dance bands, enjoying the freedom and compay of like-mided associates and he also worked some seasons in the local freezing works. He was a well known, if somehat eccentric, member of his rural/town community, living in his family home all his life. His first two books were actually published in Australia and were popular there, while not attracting the same attention in NZ. His third and fourth novels were published in NZ in the mid-1970s and ready availability of all four did much to firmly establish his reputation as a notable NZ writer. Ironically, shortly before his death, RHM is reported to have said to another NZ literaty notable:"I hope I am not another one of those poor buggers who get discovered when they're dead." That is exactly what happened, but the production of a film version of "The Scarecrow" in 1981 gave another posthumous dimension to his literary achievements, with "Predicament" (1984) and "Came a Hot Friday" (1985) also going on the big screen. Today his works will be best remembered for their vivid depiction life in rural NZ (town and county), capturing the diologue and idiom, the.ambience, sub-cultures, the life-style, often on the seamier side, which he knew well during a now departed era. The impression that much of RHM's stories, and their humour (often dark), is undoubtedly semi-autobiographical adds a measure of authenticity to his fiction. First edition of 1982 from OUP (Auckland), 64 pages, front cover photo portrait of RHM the sole illustration, card covers are VG+. as is the text section, no inscriptions. Copies of Peter Simpson's booklet have become scarce,.but it provides a comprehensive biography of RHM and his literary efforts. N° de réf. du vendeur 005359
