THE Israelites, before making their triumphant march through the Jordan to Canaan, had remained stationary for some time at Shittim, opposite Jericho. Their experience at that encampment had been checkered by vicissitudes of joy and sorrow, of humiliation and encouragement. They had been there seduced into the idolatry of Baal-Peor, and all the degrading vices with which it was interwoven. Though they had been visited with severe rebukes for their disloyalty to the King of Israel in moulding and worshipping the golden calf at the foot of Mount Sinai, they had discovered a bias towards similar disaffection during the whole of their journeyings through the desert of Arabia. They carried the star of their god Remphan, and bore the portable shrines of false gods through all the successive stages of their progress towards Canaan, and their strong propensity to offer homage to the false deities of the surrounding nations was elicited into open manifestation when they were allured to the festivities of Baal-Peor, and mingled in the detestable practices which disfigured them. God's wrath burst on them, and twenty-four thousand fell under His frown, and were suddenly cut off in the indulgence of their lusts. And what was realised in the history of the collective body of Israel is often verified in the experience of individual believers.
