My Children,-- In the explanation of the last two verses from Proverbs on the valiant woman, we saw that it was lawful for her to rejoice in the good that is done around her, and in the success of her undertakings, and to let her heart freely expand at the view of the happiness and prosperity of her family, provided only that her joy was not tainted by pride, and was restrained within the bounds of moderation: for the abuse of even what is best may excite in the soul those feelings of puerile self-love and wretched vanity, so universal among mankind, that one often knows, not what advice to give them. If they be told to rejoice in God, to rejoice in all that is good and fortunate in their lives, because the very sight of good dilates and cheers the heart, they let themselves fall at once into all the folly and unreasonableness of a paltry vanity. If, on the contrary, the motives of praise and right appreciation of things be altogether suppressed, and the legitimate satisfaction which necessarily accompanies virtue, according to the doctrine of St. Thomas, be thus destroyed, the soul pines away, and is exposed to the danger of losing all energy and activity in doing good. We therefore recommend very great caution in the manifestation of good deeds and the joy taken in them. Setting aside even the motive of humility, our pride, jealousy, easily wounded vanity, and the petty self-loves which, like so many tiny serpents, are ever winding around our hearts, should determine us on living in obscurity, on hiding our happiness and successes, .and on moving through this world as much as possible like the quiet streamlet under drooping leaves.
