9780224097130: Gerda Taro: Inventing Robert Capa

A reexamination of the woman who created the legend of Robert Capa, the world's first female photojournalist to die in combat, Gerda Taro

In Paris in 1934, a young and beautiful Jewish émigrée, Gerda Pohorylles, met a Hungarian political exile, André Friedmann. They reinvented themselves as the photographers Gerda Taro and Robert Capa—and he would become the most important photojournalist of his generation. When Gerda was killed in the Spanish Civil war at the age of 26, Robert Capa was her most notable mourner—his grief was beyond control. Her funeral drew crowds of thousands and she became a hero of the political left. Despite the legend that was built around her, she subsequently became a mere footnote in Capa's story. Seventy years after her death a long-lost suitcase was discovered in Mexico, containing thousands of negatives by Capa and Taro. Most astonishingly of all, the "Mexican suitcase" showed that photographs that had been attributed previously to Capa were, in fact, the work of Taro. Jane Rogoyska's book will trace Taro's life and reveal the depth of her relationship with Capa. Charismatic and extraordinary, they epitomized one of the most tumultuous periods of the century.

Description du livre Jonathan Cape. 1 Cloth(s), 2013. hard. État : New. In 1934 Paris, Jewish émigré Gerda Pohorylles met Hungarian political exile André Friedmann. They became lovers and photographic partners, and together sold their work under the persona of Robert Capa, a successful American photographer, while she became his agent, Gerda Taro. In 1937 Taro was killed covering the Spanish Civil War—the first female war photojournalist to die in battle—yet she seemed destined to remain a footnote in Capa's biography. Then in 2007 a suitcase turned up in Mexico, filled with thousands of negatives by both photographers, revealing that numerous photos attributed to Capa were, in fact, the work of Taro. This heavily illustrated book traces Taro's life and work and explores her complex relationship with Capa."What makes the book come alive, perhaps inevitably, are the photographs of [Taro] and Capa. They are a remarkable testimonial to two young photographers whose extraordinary talent it was to convey war at its most immediate, intimate and brutal."—Literary Review 240. Description du livre Jonathan Cape, 2013. État : New. Gerda Pohorylle and Andre Friedmann met in Paris in the 1930s and together the two political emigres created the fictitious photographer Robert Capa under whose name they published and marketed their pictures. This beautifully printed book assesses the life and work of Taro who was tragically killed while covering the Spanish Civil War with Friedman (who kept the name Capa), and includes many images recently discovered from the so-called 'Mexican suitcase' containing negatives by Taro, Capa and David 'Chim' Seymour.
