An excellent and often provocative collection of essays by an eminent social historian. Nash's contribution to our understanding of the colonial and revolutionary eras is evident in these 12 essays, 11 of which were previously published between 1963 and 1983. Grouped into two parts ("Shaping a Triracial Society" and "Reshaping Society in the Revolutionary Era"), they deal with the relations of racial groups, the distribution of power and wealth, and "how a polygot people explored the meaning and uses of freedom." It is evident throughout this volume that Nash's reputation for extensive and imaginative use of primary sources is well deserved. Highly recommended for academic and large public libraries. Roy H.
