Written by Rudolf Benesh, founder of Choreology, and revised by his wife, Joan, a former dancer with the Royal Ballet. It is a comprehensive account of the system of movement notation invented by the Beneshs and which is used all over the world by ballet and dance companies (most notably the Royal Ballet itself). For centuries choreographers had to rely on their memory to recreate the great ballets of the past and to teach by demonstarting the steps. Rudolf Benesh studied music at Morley College and founded the Institute of Choreology in 1963.
