The dust jacket is in very good condition (slight edge chipping, small scratch on back). 9 ¼ x 6 ¼, 329 pages, 26 ounces XX [From the dust jacket flaps] This book is a case study of intellectuals in the Mexican Revolution, with specific reference to four men from San Luis Potosi, known in Mexico as the cradle of the Revolution. These four men, engineer Camilo Arriaga, journalist Juan Sarabia, school teacher Librado Rivera, and student and lawyer Antonio Diaz Soto y Gama, played leadership roles in the Precursor Movement, commonly defined as all political precedents of the Revolution of 1910-1917, including the manifestos, strikes, and armed uprisings dating from these men's founding of San Luis Potosi's Club Liberal Ponciano Arriaga in 1900 to the outbreak of the Revolution in 1910. Also examined are the lives and roles of two other intellectuals prominent in the Precursor Movement: Francisco I. Madero, Mexico's first popularly elected President (1911-1913), and Anarchist Ricardo Flores Magón, leader of the Partido Liberal Mexicano (PLM). Much of the PLM's revolutionary Program of 1906, drafted by Flores Magón and other intellectuals, was incorporated into the 1917 Constitution. Defining intellectuals broadly, in the classical sense of an intelligentsia, the author focuses upon the lives of these six men to describe the interaction among social class, political struggle, individual and economic grievances, and conflicting ideologies that led to the outbreak of the Revolution and its subsequent internal clashes. In 1900, a small group of intellectuals began to agitate for the goals of nineteenth-century Liberalism: democracy, anti-clericalism, and free enterprise. They addressed their appeals mainly to members of the upper and middle classes who resented the dictatorial policies of President Porfirio Diaz and the monopoly on power held by his intellectual advisers, the Cientificos (Positivists inspired by such European thinkers as Auguste Comte). During the next three years of intensive agitation, the intellectuals leading the Precursor Movement broadened their appeal to take in the demands of workers and peasants. By 1903 they were plotting for a violent revolution to overthrow Diaz and introduce profound social change. Time and again it is seen that it was the bold ideas and actions of these men, in conjunction with labor strikes and widespread armed rebellions, that laid the ideological and military groundwork for the overthrow of Diaz. For this absorbing story of men and ideas in revolt, the author has relied almost exclusively on primary sources, including interviews with participants in the events he records. The unorthodox conclusions he reaches, especially with respect to the heretofore exaggerated roles of Madero and Carranza, suggest that many previous suppositions about the Mexican Revolution have to be re-examined.
