Présentation de l'éditeur :

A classic and vivid history of Ukraine, fully updated to cover the Euromaidan Revolution in 2014 and ongoing crisis in the Donbass.

Centre of the first great Slav civilisation in the tenth century, then divided between warring neighbours for a millennium, Ukraine finally won independence with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Tiring of their own corrupt governments, Ukrainians have since mounted two popular revolutions, taking to the streets to demand fair elections and closer ties to Europe. In the spring of 2014, Russia responded by invading Crimea and sponsoring a civil war in the Russian-speaking Donbass. Threatened by Moscow, misunderstood in the West, Ukraine hangs once more in the balance. Speaking to pro-democracy activists and pro-Russia militiamen, peasants and miners, survivors of Hitler's Holocaust and Stalin's famine, Anna Reid combines history and travel-writing to unpick the past and present of this bloody and complex borderland.

Biographie de l'auteur :
Anna Reid was born in 1965. She read law at Magdalen College, Oxford, and took a master's degree in Russian history and reform economics from London University's School of Slavonic and East European Studies. She lived in Ukraine from 1993 to 1995 where she was the Kiev correspondent for the ECONOMIST and the DAILY TELEGRAPH. She has also written for the FINANCIAL TIMES and SPECTATOR.

Description du livre Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : As New. 1st Edition. A tight, clean, and unmarked copy-" Inspired and informed by the author's own experiences in Ukraine, this is a history of a politically and culturally rich collection of borderlands. The word Ukraine means borderland and, for most of its history, the lands that makeup Ukraine has been a collection of other countries borders. Split between Russia and Poland in the 18th century, between Austria and Russia in the 19th century, and between Russia, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia between World War I and II, before being swallowed whole by the Soviet Union in 1945, Ukrainians have never, until 1991, known anything approaching a state of their own.- Borderland is a very well-researched account of Ukraine's very complex history. In several places, the prose draws the reader into the author's experience of her time in Ukraine conducting her research in interesting ways. However, the parts of the book that delve deeply into the present nation's disjointed and constantly changing territorial governance over past centuries can be confusing, and not for the faint of heart. But if you want to better understand why Russia believes Ukraine to be part of its own territory, and the varied attitudes of modern Ukrainians about their cultural heritage, you will find answers in this book.".
