First published by St. Martin's Press in 1986, Blackbird is a funny, moving, coming-of-age novel about growing up black and gay in southern California. The lead character, Johnnie Ray Rousseau, is a high school student upset over losing the lead role in the school staging of Romeo and Juliet. As if that weren't enough, his best friend has been beaten badly by his father, and his girlfriend is pressuring him to have sex for the first time. All the while, he's intrigued by Marshall MacNeill, whom he meets at an audition and is surely the sexiest man to walk God's green earthâ "at least according to Johnnie Ray. This novel of adolescent awakening is as fresh and heartfelt as it was when first published. With an introduction by Michael Nava, who is best-known for his gay mystery novels featuring Henry Rios, five of which have won Lambda Literary Awards, including Goldenboy and Howtown. He lives in San Francisco.
A film adaptation of Blackbird has been adapted to a feature film directed by Patrik-Ian Polk and starring Academy Award winner Mo Nique (Precious). It will debut on the 21st & 23rd of March 2015 at the London LGBT film festival, --BFI Flare

paperback, as new, 182pp. "No way is a black boy, never mind a gay black boy, going to get to play Romeo in this high school play," thinks Johnnie Ray Rousseau as he fidgets in drama class. Still, the news that he doesn't hits him like a body blow. In retrospect, it seems almost like an opening bell. For it was the month Todd Waterson, high school hero and all-around hunk, got the Baptist minister's daughter pregnant. The month sweet Cherie Baker, his girl through high school, decided the time had come for them to make love. The month his best friend, Efrem Zimbalist Johnson, was beaten so badly by his father he had to be hospitalized. The month he met Marshall MacNeill, surely the sexiest man ever to walk God's good earth. All in all, a month to remember. N° de réf. du vendeur 2005
