Hardcover. Etat : As New. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. In 1980 Stephen Pern went for a walk in West Africa. From the papyrus choked shores of elusive Lake Chad, Pern and his Nigerian companion, Waziri, wander south, hopscotching the international border between Nigeria and the Cameroons. The lake and the fringes of the Sahara behind them, they cross featureless savannah and baking plain until they reach the Mandara Mountains. They traverse the entire length of the hill chain until they reach the River Benue, paddling across in a dug-out canoe. For company there are two donkeys and occasional guides who lead the way to the next village but seldom beyond. The route is by tracks which avoid wheeled traffic and which connect a still traditional world, part Islamic, part pagan, where medicinal vulture's feet mingle on market stalls with transistors and strident cassettes. The lake and the fringes of the Sahara behind them, they cross featureless savannah and baking plain until they reach the Mandara Mountains. The route is by tracks which avoid wheeled traffic and which connect a still traditional world, part Islamic, part pagan, where medicinal vulture's feet mingle on market stalls with transistors and strident cassettes. Between them they muster enough of the local languages to communicate with villagers and to exchange news with other travellers on the road. But when two cultures meet Stephen Pern openly admits that far from cracking each other's codes, we may not even recognise that messages are being sent. It is this frank peeling back of preconceptions and a readiness to look directly at things which give this book its freshness and immediacy. (It) is full of unexpected and sharp detail, poignant vignettes and intriguing sidelights, as befits an account of a five-hundred-mile journey taken at a human pace and at human eye level." Very minor edge wear to boards. Dust jacket is price-clipped, light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, light creases on lower half of front panel, light rubbing. N° de réf. du vendeur 12632

Very strangely, this book would appear to have been signed on the ffep, in pencil, by Princess Diana. The signature compares extremely well with reference samples (photos on request). Maybe this was her copy of this book on West Africa, dispersed from her estate after her death. Who Knows!
