Présentation de l'éditeur :

The late Ottoman Empire is usually depicted as terminally ill, 'the sick man of Europe' according to the great powers in the nineteenth century. But was the patient dying? Did some chronic malady eventually overwhelm the Ottoman Empire? Or was the prognosis constructed and shaped by the aggrandising aims of other countries? Justin McCarthy argues strongly that the Ottoman Empire ultimately collapsed not because of any problems 'within' but because of the imperial ambitions of outside powers and the irresistable tide of nationalism. He is not blind to the weaknesses of the empire - particularly its ability to modernise its economy or finances at a sufficient pace - but in light of the baleful developments in the Balkans and Middle East in the twentieth century, it is impossible not to reflect on the opportunities lost as a result of the Ottoman demise. Until the final years of the empire peoples of different religions lived together who have been unable to live together since. Millions have been displaced, millions more killed, and the conflicts engendered by the passing into history of the Ottoman Empire continue to plague the world today.

This new history of the dismantling of an old empire, by one of the leading scholars in the field, is bold and provocative, and effective antidote to some of the tired stereotypes of western historiography that set little value to Ottoman rule.

Revue de presse :

"A stimulating and thought-provoking book.
"McCarthy..has produced a rich and very useful study of a broad and difficult subject." (Diplomacy and Statecraft 2003-03-01)

Description du livre Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, United Kingdom, 2001. Paperback. État : New. 234 x 157 mm. Language: English . Brand New Book. Here, historian Justin McCarthy tells the story of the collapse of the Ottoman Empire and how this changed the lives of Slavs, Turks, Greeks, Arabs, and Armenians. The history has striking parallels, as well as direct links, to the crises in the Balkans today. For six centuries the Ottoman Empire united a diverse array of religious and ethnic groups, but its dissolution into distinct states left a tradition of nationalism and ethnic enmity in much of the Balkans and Middle East. In particular, the majority of the Muslim population of the Ottoman Balkans would never be integrated into the new states, as the national characters of these states depended in part on the elimination of outsiders . The new map of the Balkans and Middle East, which was largely the product of the victorious Allies after World War I, made little concession to practical concerns, such as access to seaports, or the rights of minorities. Only the Turkish Republic was able to thwart the plans of the conquerors by defeating military incursion. Ideal for undergraduates in history and political science, The Ottoman Peoples and the End of Empire provides the historical background to one of the central conflicts of our time.
