Description du livre Hardcover. Etat : VG+. Etat de la jaquette : VG. Photos, Diagrams, Maps (illustrateur). 1st. Of the many aspects of navel operations during WWII, that involving the ships generically known as "torpedo boats" was probably the least recognised in post-war maritime literature. For these small ships of war stealth, speed and manoeuverability was paramount in their hit and evade tactics. They also operated mainly at night, where the quiet, stealthy approach was a prime requirement. The RN , the USN, the Germans and Italians all operated these fast, and elusive craft, with the Japanese employing them to a lesser degree. During WWII many different versions of these fast craft evolved, most featuring torpeodos, others with guns alone. Operations were both defensive and offensive and included close inshore work and Commando-type missions. For the RN the major areas of operations were in the North Sea, the Channel and the Mediterranean, with the Adriatic Sea becoming an area of intensive activity. In the Pacific the USN operated its PT boats extensively in the early campaigns around the Solomon Islands/New Guinea and later off the Phillipines. The extensive German use of these small fighting ships in most theatres is also covered. along with those of other Axis navies. Cooper's book incorporates many first-hand accounts of the close quarter encounters that were typical of these craft, collectively known as the "torpedo boats." These were mainly commanded and manned by younger men, with the RN ships particularly reliant of short-service volunteers. The manner in which the design and development of this type of warship changed during WWII is also well documented. An excellent all-inclusive record of this aspect and naval combat in the 1939-45 conflict. First edition of 1970 from Macdonald, 296 pages including index, illustrated with 30 b/w photographs, 10 maps and cut-away drawing of a typical RN craft at both double page end-papers.
