Biographie de l'auteur :
Philip Hinchcliffe was producer of Doctor Who between 1974 and 1977. During his tenure, the series took a darker, more adult turn, with the stories inflluenced by classic horror films such as those made by Hammer. However, despite the popularity of these 'Gothic' serials, the BBC received complaints from Mary Whitehouse of the National Viewers' and Listeners' Association that Doctor Who was now too frightening for children. The BBC subsequently changed its policy and decided to lighten the tone of the show, and Hinchcliffe agreed to leave the programme, becoming producer of the police series Target. He went on to write three Doctor Who novelisations for Target Books - The Keys of Marinus, The Seeds of Doom and The Masque of Mandragora - and in 2014 he wrote two Doctor Who audio plays - The Ghosts of Gralstead and The Devil's Armada - collected together as the Big Finish title Philip Hinchcliffe Presents.
Présentation de l'éditeur :
Forced off course by the Mandragora Helix, the TARDIS lands in the province of San Martino in fifteenth-century Italy. Here, the court astrologer, Hieronymous, has been taken over by the Mandragora energy-form. Hieronymous and the other members of his star-worshipping black magic cult will be used as a bridgehead, enabling the Mandragora Helix to conquer the Earth and rule it through their chosen servants. The Doctor has to defeat not only the Mandragora energy, but the evil schemes of the murderous Count Frederico who plans to usurp the place of his nephew, the rightful ruler of the province. Tim Pigott-Smith reads Philip Hinchcliffe’s complete and unabridged novelisation, first published by Target Books in 1977. ‘BBC Audiobooks has chosen well with its books and has taken the right approach with its readers... they benefit from new music and sound effects’ - Doctor Who Magazine.
