Présentation de l'éditeur :
Fully restored edition of Anthony Burgess' original text of A Clockwork Orange, with a glossary of the teen slang 'Nadsat', explanatory notes, pages from the original typescript, interviews, articles and reviewsEdited by Andrew Biswell With a Foreword by Martin Amis'It is a horrorshow story ...'Fifteen-year-old Alex likes lashings of ultraviolence. He and his gang of friends rob, kill and rape their way through a nightmarish future, until the State puts a stop to his riotous excesses. But what will his re-education mean?A dystopian horror, a black comedy, an exploration of choice, A Clockwork Orange is also a work of exuberant invention which created a new language for its characters. This critical edition restores the text of the novel as Anthony Burgess originally wrote it, and includes a glossary of the teen slang 'Nadsat', explanatory notes, pages from the original typescript, interviews, articles and reviews, shedding light on the enduring fascination of the novel's 'sweet and juicy criminality'.Anthony Burgess was born in Manchester in 1917 and educated at Xaverian College and Manchester University. He spent six years in the British Army before becoming a schoolmaster and colonial education officer in Malaya and Brunei. After the success of his Malayan Trilogy, he became a full-time writer in 1959. His books have been published all over the world, and they include The Complete Enderby, Nothing Like the Sun, Napoleon Symphony, Tremor of Intent, Earthly Powers and A Dead Man in Deptford. Anthony Burgess died in London in 1993.Andrew Biswell is the Professor of Modern Literature at Manchester Metropolitan University and the Director of the International Anthony Burgess Foundation. His publications include a biography, The Real Life of Anthony Burgess, which won the Portico Prize in 2006. He is currently editing the letters and short stories of Anthony Burgess.
Présentation de l'éditeur :
Penguin Decades bring you the novels that helped shape modern Britain. When they were published, some were bestsellers, some were considered scandalous, and others were simply misunderstood. All represent their time and helped define their generation, while today each is considered a landmark work of storytelling. Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange was published in 1962 and has been controversial ever since. It tells the story of fifteen-year-old Alex - whose chief preoccupations are Beethoven's Ninth and ultra-violence - as he and his droogs rampage though a dystopian future seeking thrills, until they come under the control of the state's sinister apparatus.

Description du livre Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Barry Trengrove (Dustwrapper design) (illustrateur). First Edition. A scarce second printing of the true first edition, published in 1970. The book was originally published by William Heinemann in 1962, but not reprinted again until this printing. Further printings followed sporadically in 1972, 1975 and 1982. The 1970 second printing is scarce as the majority of copies went to lending libraries. With the iconic artwork of Barry Trengrove on the front panel of the dustwrapper. ***Very good in mauve cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still nice and bright. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners quite sharp. Boards clean and unmarked. Very slight vertical reading crease to the spine - hardly noticeable. Spine tight. Page block edges just slightly marked and foxed. Internally also very good with no inscriptions, but there is a small biro mark and a Foyles Bookshop label on the front pastedown (hidden by the flap of the dustwrapper). No internal foxing. Very light creasing to the first few preliminary pages - also hardly noticeable. Pages clean. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper, which has been corner price-clipped by the publisher on the front flap with a new price label affixed [now gone - just a shadow remaining]. The dustwrapper is complete, but as so often found with this title, because the dustwrapper was not laminated, the edges are quite rubbed with some loss to the mauve surface colour. Head and tail of spine of dustwrapper creased and rubbed with small areas of loss. However, there is hardly any of the usual fading to the mauve background or orange titles on the spine. (Please see scans) ***204mm x134mm. 196 pages. ***''"A Clockwork Orange" is the scarifying autobiographical confession of Alex, a juvenile delinquent of the unspecified but not very distant future, who tells the tale of his own criminal excesses and his 're-education' in the peculiar slang of his generation. It will take the reader only a few pages to master and revel in the expressive language of 'nadsat'; after that he has before him an easily digestible feast of picaresque villainy and social satire. The book can be read as a straight horror comedy or, on a deeper level, as a fable of good and evil and the importance of human choice. As the genial Alex himself might put it: "It is a horrorshow story, which will either make you smeck like bezoomny or bring the old tears to your glazzies."' (Quotes taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) ***A second printing of the true first edition of this twentieth century cult classic, in very good condition, in its original dustwrapper. As mentioned, this second printing is now scarce as most copies were lost to public lending libraries. A nice collectable edition of this classic work of postmodern fiction. **For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. N° de réf. du vendeur 8299z
