Anthony Powell was born in 1905. After working in publishing and as a scriptwriter, he began to write for the Daily Telegraph in the mid-1930s. He served in the army during World War II and subsequently became the fiction reviewer on the TLS. Next came five years as literary editor of Punch. He was appointed a Companion of Honour in 1988. In addition to the twelve-novel sequence, A Dance to the Music of Time, Anthony Powell was the author of seven other novels, and four volumes of memoirs, To Keep the Ball Rolling. He died in March 2000.

This would be ideal for someone who does not have the dust jacket, as the book is ex-lib, but the jacket is in lovely condition. The dust jacket shows the slightest signs of edge wear, but remains bright, whole and charming. Internally, the front pastedown is rather aggressively discoloured, and there are various library ink and stamp markings throughout. Aside from this, the pages are legible and complete. The boards have slight rubbing and discolouration at the edges and corners but are otherwise clean and bright with no fading to the lettering. Browning to the page edges with a small scratch to the top edges and one small brown spot to the fore edges. Endpapers are a little browned but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. The jacket has tape marks along the edges of the front and rear flaps and a small closed tear to the bottom left corner of the rear panel but is otherwise bright and near Fine in appearance.
