The author was an academic and had previously written about the Cold War and Muckrakers. This study presents an outline of the history of Vietnam from its colonization by the French during the 19th century to the so-called peace settlement of 1973 and the new war which followed it. Its principle theme is the lengthy struggle of the Vietnamese to regain their independence. It seeks to explain how and why their anti-colonial struggle became transformed into a conflict involving the world's major powers. One question it tries to answer is why the guerrillas in the South, together with the largely peasant society of North Vietnam, were able to withstand the onslaught of American military technology.
