Biographie de l'auteur :
Yasunari Kawabata was born in Osaka in 1899. In 1968 he became the first Japanese writer to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. One of Japan’s most distinguished novelists, he published his first stories while he was still in high school, graduating from Tokyo Imperial University in 1924. His short story “The Izu Dancer,” first published in 1925, appeared in The Atlantic Monthly in 1955. Kawabata authored numerous novels, including Snow Country (1956), which cemented his reputation as one of the preeminent voices of his time, as well as Thousand Cranes (1959), The Sound of the Mountain (1970), The Master of Go (1972), and Beauty and Sadness (1975). He served as the chairman of the P.E.N. Club of Japan for several years and in 1959 he was awarded the Goethe Medal in Frankfurt. Kawabata died in 1972.

The successful writer Oki has reached middle age and is filled with regrets. He returns to Kyoto to find Otoko, a young woman with whom he had a terrible affair many years before, and discovers that she is now a painter, living with a younger woman as her lover. Otoko has continued to love Oki and has never forgotten him, but his return unsettles not only her but also her young lover. This is a work of strange beauty, with a tender touch of nostalgia and a heartbreaking sensitivity to those things lost forever.

Translated from the Japanese by Howard Hibbett. The book was first published in English by Alfred A. Knopf, New York in 1975, and was originally published in Japanese in 1965 under the title "Utsukushisa to kanashimi to". Dustwrapper designed by Philip Mann. ***Near fine in cream textured cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and gilt Japanese characters to the front board. The gilt is still fairly bright but faded in places. Head and tail of spine slightly creased and rubbed. The lower corner of the back board is slightly creased. Boards clean and unmarked. Top edge of page block stained green by the publisher - still clean and bright. Edges of page block clean without any foxing. Fore-edge of page block untrimmed [rough-cut as the binding is actually American - taken from the American sheets]. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Interior pages are clean with no foxing - paper stock clean and unmarked. No creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a very good colour-illustrated dustwrapper that has been corner price-clipped. Edges of dustwrapper just slightly creased and rubbed, mainly at the head and tail of the spine. No chips or tears, but please note there is a small ink stain affecting the lower spine and back panel of the dustwrapper. Ueno is now living with her protégée and a jealous lesbian lover, Keiko Sakami, and the unfolding relationships between Oki, Otoko, and Keiko form the plot of the novel. Keiko states several times that she will avenge Otoko for Oki's abandonment, and the story coalesces into a climactic ending.'
