The fourth edition of The Dieter's Calorie Counter is a compilation of basic foods, brand-name foods, and fast foods--all integrated and alphabetized.

Because this book is alphabetized, you should have no difficulty finding whatever food you want to look up.  However, there are instances in which you may have to look in more than one place.  If you are looking for a specific food and cannot find it immediately, look for it under a category, such as cakes, pies, pasta sauce, rolls,  etc.  Wherever sensible, I have cross-referenced listings, but the pressure of space has made it impossible to do so for every item.

All the foods included in The Dieter's Calorie Counter are listed in useful household portions.  And similar foods  are generally listed in uniform measures.  However, this was not possible--or even reasonable--in certain cases.  All breads, for example, could have been listed in a standard one-ounce measure, but that would mean you would have to weigh a slice of bread  to determine its calorie content.  Hence, breads and various other foods are listed by the unit (piece or slice or portion) as packaged by the manufacturer.  This means that although you can determine the calories in individual slices of bread, you should not compare different brands and varieties of breads (or other foods listed by the piece), because they may vary a great deal in size.

Since the purpose of this book is to help you lose weight, remember also to compare only foods that are listed in similar measures.  Do not compare foods listed in dis-similar measures.  This rule particularly applies to the confusion between measures by capacity and measures by weight.  Eight ounces is a measure of how much something weighs; one cup is a measure of how much space it occupies.  An eight-ounce cup of lightweight food such as popcorn weighs about one ounce, but eight ounces of popcorn would fill many cups.

Naturally, you can convert a similar unit of measure into a smaller or larger amount.  The following table may be useful in making such conversions.
Equivalents by Capacity (all measures level)
1 quart  =  4 cups
1 cup  =  8 fluid ounces = 1/2 pint = 16 tablespoons
2 tablespoons  =  1 fluid ounce
1 tablespoon  =  3 teaspoons

Equivalents by Weight
1 pound  =  16 ounces
3.57 ounces  =  100 grams
1 ounce  =  28.35 grams

The material contained in The Dieter's Calorie Counter is based on information from the United States government, from producers and processors of brand-name foods, and from restaurant chains.  The data contained herein are the latest available as  this book goes to press.  Bear in mind, however, that the food industry often changes recipes and sizes and may discontinue a product or add new ones.  In the future I will revise and update this book to keep you completely informed.
