Hardcover. Etat : Fine. Etat de la jaquette : very good. First edition. First printing. Hardcover. xv+ 272 pp. Illustrated Fine in very good dust jacket. In the spring of 1940 when Nazi forces had swept through Europe and were poised to strike at England's shores, the British government ordered the internment of all enemy aliens, including those who had just escaped from Hitler's grip, and prepared to deport them to Canada. They were put aboard prison ships and arried in Quebec City in the summer of 1940. The Canadians were perpared to receive dangerous prisons of war but instead got a motley crew of teenaged students, rabbis and priests. The author, himself one of the detainees, provides a colorful account of life in the various Canadian internment camps and the struggles by inmates and a group of dedicated Canadians on the outside to help them gain freedom.
