Si selon Jean Cocteau, « la mode meurt jeune », Balenciaga échappe à cette loi. Ce grand couturier s’est imposé comme le plus inventif de son époque, n’ayant vécu que pour et par une oeuvre inégalée, vouée à la recherche de l’élégance la plus sobre. Tout au long de ces années, son intemporalité est apparue comme une évidence. Souvent contradictoires, ses créations opposaient la simplicité et la mesure à une audace parfois excentrique et abstraite. Il était l’austérité et la violence baroque de l’Espagne.
Biographie de l'auteur :
marie-andré jouve est l’auteur de Balenciaga avec Jacqueline Demornex aux Éditions du Regard. Responsable des archives Balenciaga depuis 1980, elle a participé à plusieurs expositions : à Tokyo et au musée des tissus de Lyon en 1980, au Fashion Institute de New York en 1986, à la National Gallery à Melbourne en 1992, à la fondation Bismarckà Paris en 1994, au musée du Costume de Barcelone et à la fondation Balenciaga de Gétaria.

Some sunning to bottom edges of cloth. The binding is 'all shook up'. The binding is slack at the spine, resulting in the fore-edge of the pages not being flush. Basque-born Cristobal Balenciaga, one of the leading couturiers of this century, found his metier in dress design early, spurred by his mother's work as a dressmaking teacher. Encouraged further by a noblewoman's interest in his talents, Balenciaga, aged 24, opened his first couture house in 1919. Journalist Demornex and Balenciaga archivist Jouve trace the development of his long career, which endured until the master's retirement in 1971, a year before his death. Balenciaga's famous draping technique, inspired by the paintings of Zurbaran, led to the creation of fantastic silhouettes (Colette, Marlene Dietrich and the Duchess of Windsor were among his clients), exemplified in evening dresses with enormous, jutting shoulders or full skirts bunched at calf level. Another trademark was lavishly ornamented fabric, such as a black muslin crisscrossed with ruched black lace.
