John Burningham's first book, Borka, signified the beginning of a distinguished career in children's books. Since its publication in 1963, he has gone on to produce over thirty books for children that have been translated into many different languages and have sold all over the world. He has also produced a number of books for adults, including the volumes England and France.
John Burningham has twice been awarded the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal (once for Borka and once for Mr Gumpy's Outing) and has also won the Kurt Maschler Award for Granpa.
Right from the start there is something odd about the young goose named Borka: she is born without any feathers. So when her mother knits her a smart grey woollen jumper instead, Borka is delighted; but all the other geese laugh at her. While the others learn to fly and to swim, Borka does not join in because her brothers ans sisters tease her, and her jersey takes too long to dry when it gets wet.
Soon, summer comes to an end and the geese prepare to fly to a warmer land for the winter. But Borka does not go; she cannot fly. Instead, she searches for shelter on one of the boats moored in the estuary. And it is there that Borka meets her new friends and her adventures can truly begin...
Borka was John Burningham's first book for children and won him the Kate Greeaway Medal for illustrations. This special edition marks the fortieth anniversary of the publication of this heart-warming tale.
