His work is a major contribution to our understanding of these complex and intricate patterns of social and economic life.′ Patricia Voydanoff, American Sociological Association.
′The importance of this book should not go unrecognised at a time when the social issues surrounding the central feature of human experience – reproduction – are receiving renewed interest in the light of the new reproductive technologies currently available... its impact is likely to be significant... All those teaching or researching into reproductive behaviour should have this carefully researched and well argued book on their shelves.′ Journal of Biosocial Science.
′I found this book enjoyable, stimulating, and a good read for any social scientist interested in what, before reading this book, I would unhesitatingly have called the family.′ The Economic Journal
Robertson argues that looking back on the pre–industrial world can help us to understand our dependence on such institutions as banks, schools, factories, clinics and others. It can also increase our awareness of how our experience of industrialism has biased our thinking about family life.
Beyond the Family pursues the idea that in order to understand and perhaps influence the many important issues of modern life – gender and generation gaps, economic and political implications of increased longevity – we need to readdress the role of the family, ignoring emotional prejudices, and assemble new interpretations of the social organisation of reproduction.
