Mr. Mumble has a tickle in his throat, which transforms him into (cough-cough-cough) Mr. Mumble when he does his errands. "Drollery used to rousing effect throughout."--Publishers Weekly. "Full of puns, this humorous book takes a clever look at how a person can be misunderstood."--Children's Book Review Service.

The success of this book hinges on the element of surprise and the humor readers find in Mr. Mumby's strange predicament: he awakens one morning with a mysterious throat complaint that results in a series of miscommunications and unbidden results. Intending to buy a dozen bagels he receives a dozing beagle, a panda bear instead of a pound of pears, etc. When he consults a doctor, the "problem" emerges--a bird had been lodged in his throat. Catalanotto's watercolors are arresting with their interesting color combinations, pliancy, and comic visual detail. The paintings loom large, perspective ever changing, edges melting; they give a sense of unbalance, of life being a bit out of focus and unpredictable. Perhaps because the tone of the story does not initially seem playful--and the portrayal of Mr. Mumby awakens not only curiosity but pathos--readers may be unprepared for the zany happenings to follow, but will willingly toss logic aside because of the cleverly executed illustrations. The text is not so strong or convincing. The wordplays are contrivances, remaining narrative explanations rather than the garbled requests of Mr. Mumby himself. And so, in the end, this is a perplexing book, entertaining but not as funny as it could be, interesting despite its shortcomings, impressive for it strengths. --Susan Powers, Berkeley Carroll Street School, Brooklyn
