Praise for The Bat Scientist

(star)"With clear, informal prose and beautiful close-up color photos on every double-page spread, this exciting title in the Scientists in the Field series follows a team of dedicated bat specialists. Along the way, Carson dispels popular myths about the often maligned animals with solid information: bats are not blind, very few drink blood, and they are important pest controllers. The color photographs, including many full-page images, are spellbinding... Whether describing the physics of echolocation or the present crisis of white-nose syndrome, Carson encourages readers to rethink stereotypes about creatures once scorned as flying vermin and shows how intricately their survival is tied to our own. Extensive back matter, including a glossary and a bibliography of books and websites, closes this standout resource." -- Booklist, starred review

"A strong scientific look at a unique and often unloved mammal and the scientists who happily investigate them"—School Library Journal

(star) "The emphasis on reproductive science and zoo work both make this an unusual addition to the admirable Scientists in the Field series, one that should be welcome in high-school as well as middle-school libraries." -- Kirkus, starred review

"Like many of the entries in this popular series, Emi is an engaging and informative." -- School Library Journal

"Carson provides fascinating detail on the painstaking observational research involved in figuring out animal reprodution when there is little prior data to work with and and on the creative ways scientists like Roth solve problems...Throughout the book color photographs featuring Roth at work are upstaged only by those of the rhinos themselves." -- The Horn Book

“Engaging,” –Washington Post Book World

Présentation de l'éditeur :

In the Arizona desert, scientists conduct studies and experiments aimed to help us better understand our environment and what sort of things are happening to it due to climate change. The location is Biosphere 2, an immense structure that contains a replica ocean, savannah, and rainforest, among other Earth biomes. It’s a unique take on the Scientists in the Field mission statement — in this case, the lab is a replica that allows the scientists to conduct large-scale experiments that would otherwise be impossible.
