Scully Christopher Crockett La Cruz is an actor, fortune seeker and adventurer from the long isolated orbital technocratic democracies of Circumluna and the Bubbles Congeries. He lands in what he believes to be Canada to reclaim family mining interests only to discover that Canada is now North Texas and what is left of civilization in North America is ruled by primitive, backslapping, bigger than life anti intellectual 'good ole boys' convinced of their own moral superiority. In this tortured version of history, the giant hormone boosted Anglo Saxon inhabitants rule a diminutive Mexican underclass, the original Texas, or Texas, had actually secretly ruled the pre nuclear war United States since 1845. Texas escaped the nuclear destruction of the rest of the United States because of the foresight of Lyndon the First. An enormous bunker then known as the Houston Carlsbad Caverns Denver Kansas City Little Rock Pentagram and now referred to simply as the Texas Bunker had saved the heartland during a war that destroyed both American coasts, Europe, Russia, China, and Africa. Texas then conquered the rest of the continent, although Hawaii and Cuba remain stubbornly unconquered. Fritz Reuter Leiber (1910-92), was an American writer of fantasy, horror, and science fiction. He was also a poet, actor in theatre and films, playwright and chess expert. With writers such as Robert E. Christopher Crockett La Cruz (or 'Scully') is an actor, an extrovert and a ladies man. He is also an opportunist and a liberal on the side. Most conspicuously he is a Thin, a muscleless free-fall phenomenon whose home is Circumluna, a self-sustaining Moon satellite. Scully can only support life in Earth-gravity conditions by encasing himself in a powered titanium exoskeleton. To most of the inhabitants of the ravaged post World War III Earth, he looks outlandish, even sinister. To their women he looks attractive. Earth looks equally odd to Scully. The uneasy truce brought about by the exhaustion of radioactive material has left the United States only partly habitable and wholly dominated by Texas. In fact there is no U.S.A., only Greater Texas. And a Greater Texas demands greater Texans. Hormone treatment has turned Texans into giants and their Mex slaves into unhappy dwarves resentful of their fate and ripe for revolution. To the Mexes, Scully is a Sign, a talisman, a leader. To Scully, the Mexes are a Cause, their superstitious awe of him bringing his actor's vanity to the aid of his humanitarian impulses and forcing him to take the role they thrust upon him.
