Description du livre Hardback: 8¾" x 5½". Etat : Fine: Very small signs of wear. Etat de la jaquette : Fine. Cover Art: Hieronymus Bosch (illustrateur). 1st Edition. © 1980: A stand-alone novel by Ian Watson. 1st edition, 1st printing:- Synopsis: Starship Schiaparelli, searching for a colony founded by an earlier ship, lands on a mysterious planet, only to be immobilized by a powerful outside force. Sean Athlone, psychologist amongst the crew of six, realizes that the luxurious landscape surrounding them, with its great fruits and birds and naked celebrating people, is precisely that of the painting by Hieronymus Bosch, The Garden Of Earthly Delights. The painting, as Sean learns, has been landscaped thus for the original colonists by a 'God' - who has also granted them a form of immortality - and is part of a plan. But what is this God? And what is the plan? Who exactly originated it - and why? As Sean, with two women crew members Denise and Muthoni, wanders through the fabulous painting searching for the enigmatic Knossos - the presiding genius of this world, who seems to have a hot line to God - it becomes clear that this world, like Bosch's painting, is divided into three parts. In order to confront God in Eden it will first be necessary for Sean and his companions to pass through a literal Hell. But the outcome of their search is more surprising than Sean or Knossos - or even the God - can envisage:- Review(s): "As in his previous novels, Ian Watson continues to startle and amaze the reader with adventures in the realm of ideas and action. 'The Gardens Of Delight', set within the visionary dreaming of a medieval artist who has both enchanted and horrified successive generations, is Ian Watson's strangest and most compelling to date":- (original cost £6.95).
